| Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: Being that your newest release A New Dawn for the Dead has had a little time to settle and you can reflect on its progress. What has the overall reaction been with the fans, especially with Gore’s departure and playing as a five piece? Wilson: Yeah it's been a stressful but worthwhile experience. I suppose it is for any band. Running up to the release, the media seemed to be taking to the album the way we wanted, but it was the public opinion that really counted. We had been playing some of the songs at festivals, and the response was positive, but again, it's the record that counts. I have to say, the response since the release date has been phenomenal, and that’s what we wanted. The reaction with Mr. Gore leaving is different. It's been since April last year, and we played a festival one week later, and rocked the place! Everyone thinks its better now, and to be honest, so do I! Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: What’s the significance behind the album title? Wilson: Well it’s a double edged thing. There's the obvious significance to Dawn of the Dead, as we have always loved horror films, and it's a big part of our influence. It's also the fact that the last few years have come to a culmination, and that point is this album. So this album feels for us like a new chapter opening for Gorerotted. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: I noticed your album artwork is somewhat similar to your video Only Tools and Corpses from your last release. Was that the intent? Wilson: Yeah, it had to be. The artwork suited Only Tools and Corpses, but it would have been so wrong on this one. The music and the lyrics have developed so much on this one, so it made sense that the artwork and the whole presentation moved on with it. I think it looks awesome! Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: There’s a limited edition version of the album available that includes a DVD with live footage as well as a cover of Emperor’s "I Am the Black Wizards". What made the band choose to record that particular cover and for the fans that have not seen the added DVD, can you elaborate on what the live footage consists of? Wilson: Well we wanted to choose a song that we all liked, and one that would make an interesting cover. Many bands pick shit covers, and it sounds just the same or just crap! Emperor writes really amazing music, and we did it in our style completely. I think it’s a great version, not perfect in any way, but an honest tribute to a great band. The DVD is two live shows and the video for Only Tools and Corpses! One show is from Summer Breeze in Germany last year, and shows us in the big festival arena, the other is a small club show environment, and we thrive in both. It's a really cool package. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: What made the band decide to let Stephan Fimmers (Necrophagist) contribute his efforts in producing and mixing for the new album? Have you worked with him previously? Wilson: We've never worked with him before, but it made sense. He owned the studio we had hired, and he is such an awesome musician, and really dedicated to his work. He also has a great ear for sound, and I hate it when bands have to have a name like Sneap or something, and you know what it'll sound like. Specks really pulled it out of the bag, and then pulled it out of his pants! Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: How long did it take to write and then subsequently record A New Dawn for the Dead because it has been about 2 years since your last release? Wilson: Yeah, it was actually 1 1/2 years, but there is a difference in time for the US release. We wrote it over the space of a year I think, and we had to do it in between tours and festivals, and whenever we had a spare moment, or weren't drunk! Then we went to the studio for two weeks to record, but the overall process took about 3 weeks, redoing parts and mixing. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: Whether it is in lyrics or publicly, the band has never shied away from confessing about the drugs, women and drinking that goes on within the band. Ever think about slowing down because we’d like to have another album from Gorerotted? (Laughs) Wilson: (Laughs) We'll never slow down, I mean, did Crue slow down? The thing is, Gorerotted is a very honest band, and what you see is what you get. We're not going to change the way we are on record, or on tour, or anything. We are the same guys that get kicked out of the pub every weekend, and we're honest to god metal fans. Don't you worry, you'll get another record, as long as you get the beers in first! Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: Since being signed to Metal Blade, do you find that Gorerotted has a new found recognition within the media because it’s got to be tough for an underground death metal band without proper promotion which Metal Blade is brilliantly noted for? They have an excellent promotional dept. Wilson: Yes I agree, Metal Blade really is on the ball, and it's great to work with them! But the whole reason we're there is because we put this work in ourselves in the first place. So many underground bands think all you have to do is make some good songs, then wait for the bus to arrive. No way! We got out there from day one, and busted our guts, and that was just the drinking! (Laughs) Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: Speaking of Metal Blade, can you tell me the details behind the toilet paper and the promo CD’s? I’ve only heard bits and pieces as to what happened, though what I heard was pretty funny. Wilson: (Laughs) We had nothing to do with it, but I know who did. Who said Andreas at Metal Blade is a cock? We were on the bus to Fuck the Commerce in Germany, and Tim got a call from his girl, saying that a box of Gorerotted toilet paper had arrived. We really had no idea. But I think it suits us so well. I mean if you hate us, you can wipe your ass with us, and if you love us, you can have a wank on us. Everyone’s a winner, petit dejeuner! Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: I know you have a small run of tour date’s coming-up overseas but do you foresee the band touring the states at all. Wilson: Well Europe is our main touring ground just now, and that’s for obvious reasons. Coming to the states is something we have always wanted to do, and something we will do. We have had several offers to come already, but we want to wait for the right offer. So many bands jump at the first chance to go to the US, but we want to bide our time, and when we do hit your shores, it'll be the biggest party ever! Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: Thanks for taking the time in interviewing with me. The new albums brutal! With that said, do you have any final words for The Metal Web!? Wilson: Well thanks for your kind words, maybe when we come to the US you can get the beers in, and get your clothes off, whilst getting naked at the same time! Immediately, if not even sooner! Oh yeah, and has anyone seen Junky Jon's bong, it seems to have gone missing. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: (Laughs) Well, I can definitely promise you a beer but you’re just going to have to fantasize the rest! It was a real pleasure speaking with you.
