Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: You recently just got back from tour in the US as well as Canada. How did it go?

Kevin Cameron: It was great, thanks. We did about 20 or so shows and had great reception pretty much every night. We were a bit worried about being the only heavy band on the tour but lots of kids came out to support us.

Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: When thinking of a band name, where in the world did "I Killed The Prom Queen" originate from? It’s definitely unique! (Laughs)

Kevin Cameron: We’ll, none of us are entirely sure because it was quite some time ago. The most scrupulous answer we have is, a friend suggested it while a few of the members were watching one of the Jamie-lee Curtis Prom Night movies. There was a line similar to I Killed The Prom Queen in it.

Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: Speaking of the album, you brought in Fredrik Nordstrom and Patrik Sten (Studio Fredman) to produce. How much do you think their work affected the overall ambiance of the album?

Kevin Cameron: Their production is second to none. We felt that based on previous works by the duo with Dimmu Borgir, Darkest Hour, Soilwork and In Flames, that their skills would best suit the overall mix to our songs. A lot of the tracking was done by Jona. But when it came to mix time, that’s when we really went "this" is why we flew to Sweden! (Laughs)

Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: Since your last release, how do you feel the band has grown when comparing to Music For The Recently Deceased, and what do you see as the catalyst for that growth?

Kevin Cameron: The songs on this CD were written around April-May 2005 and it took quite a lot of time for it to be released. Since then, we have all been wanting to head in a much heavier direction which a few of the Music For The Recently Deceased songs hint at. Our vocalist joined after the album was finished. He then re-recorded totally new vocals on it some months later. With his voice being so much more extreme to the previous singers, who in a way we were writing to suit, it gave the album a totally new feel and also got us excited to write totally new material with him. Seeing the difference in style, musical ability and overall sound since our 2003 CD and the current one, it’s a good indication of how the next step of I Killed The Prom Queen will move again. The new concepts that we’ve been playing around with are definitely the heaviest idea’s we’ve ever had!

Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: If you could pick one track off the album that you feel depicts I Killed The Prom Queen best, which would it be and why?

Kevin Cameron: That’s hard. I’m more a fan of the heavier songs off it. For one, I would like to say Bet It All On Black, because its closest to where we are at now. But, for overall sound and from fans reactions, Your Shirt Would Look Better With A Colombian Necktie seems to be the fave!

Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: What prompted the instrumental There Will Be No Violins When You Die?

Kevin Cameron: Jona had the opening riff to it for a very long time and always wanted to put it in a song. We tried it a few times as intro’s to songs but it never felt right. I think there was possibly about seven skeletons of songs we were writing that were totally scrapped and this riff could very well have been from one of those. It came about in the studio where we decided the album needed a "closer" rather than ending basically as the album starts. So that got pretty much written and tracked on the spot. It turned out pretty cool though!

Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: With Music For The Recently Deceased being your first Metal Blade debut, how did the signing come about?

Kevin Cameron: Im not totally clear. I think it was a mix from recommendations of some of our friends bands on the label and also the owner of our Australian label who has ties with Metal Blade. He struck up a deal to get us released in the USA. What ever the outcome, I definitely cant complain!

Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: How supportive is your home country’s metal audience to I Killed The Prom Queen? I know your first release When Goodbye Means Forever did extremely well in the charts there.

Kevin Cameron: It’s great. This album did even better than the previous. Apparently, it was the highest, fastest selling heavy CD in the first week of any sort ever in Austrailia, which is quite overwhelming. We were worried because the album got leaked onto the internet about three weeks prior to the release. But, luckily we have a lot of honest fans who went out and picked up a copy. The shows here are great too. Our last tour was about sixty five dates covering pretty much everywhere playable in Australia. Most bands do ten to twenty dates because the country isn’t real big and aside from a few occasions, it was a real successful tour.

Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: What’s next for I Killed The Prom Queen?

Kevin Cameron: We head back out in Australia in a few days with the brilliant Misery Signals from USA, as well as a few other bands. That lasts for a few weeks. From there we go to Japan, then onto a thirty-five or so date tour through the UK and Europe with Bleeding Through Caliban and All Shall Perish. Then either directly after this or our next Australian batch of shows, we will head back to the states! So its going to be a busy first half of the year.

Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: Thanks for the interview. I’m definitely looking forward to up-coming releases. With that said, do you have any final words for
The Metal Web!?

Kevin Cameron: No worries. Final words? Crocodile Dundee isn’t really like Australia at all! (Laughs)
