| Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: What has your newest release “Bloodletting” brought to the table that differs from past albums? Bobby “Blitz”: “Bloodletting” encompasses where we are as well as where we’ve been. I think a unique quality of Overkill is that we never abandon our past but also never stop naturally evolving or progressing. So, the record takes on a blend of now and then, always identifiable, always Overkill. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: I see that you recorded this album at Carriage House Studios and pre-recorded at Gear. How long did the recording and mix take before making the final product? Bobby “Blitz”: Sixteen hours. The writing process never stops with us, sort of a “blue collar” work ethic. DD begins collecting riffs at the end of one project for the next. These riffs eventually become full songs over the course of the touring year. I finish them in about three months. Then back in to record. In the interim there are countless demos and adjustments. I think this method always keeps our stuff fresh, at least to us. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: The artwork for the CD is pretty intense. Who comes up with the cover concept? Bobby “Blitz”: Travis Smith. Seampieces is the man! We communicate our ideas and he comes up with the concept, then we “yea” or “nea” it. If it’s a “yea”, we all adjust it until we’re satisfied. Travis is right on it with what we are looking for. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: When “Bloodletting” was finalized for press, is there anything that the band and/or yourself wished you had changed? Bobby “Blitz”: There is always something, in hindsight, but the whole project is linked so the changes in many cases are not seen until the final result. I think these changes actually come to light on later projects but “Bloodletting” as a whole is on the money for us. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: Which do you enjoy more, the recording or the touring aspect of the business and has Overkill changed labels or is Sanctuary a division of CMC? Bobby “Blitz”: Sanctuary and CMC have joined in the states to form our label “Metal Is”. My favorite would be shows! Not necessarily touring but the shows. That’s why I started doing this and why I continue today. Instantaneous gratification or falling on your fucking face! (Laughs) It’s an unbelievable feeling and high. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: What can the fans expect on this tour in support of “Bloodletting”? Bobby “Blitz”: “Overkill”! Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: Speaking of touring, care to share any memorable “Overkill” shows or tours? Bobby “Blitz”: In one way or another they are all memorable. My favorite was with Motorhead because it was “Motorhead”! These guy’s are what it’s about for me as a fan. I watched them every night! Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: When not touring or recording, how does Overkill spend their time? Bobby “Blitz”: Chronic masturbators, waiting to tour again. (Laughs) Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: (Laughs) Most musicians have an influence that made them either become a vocalist or pick up an instrument. Who are Overkill’s influences and why? Bobby “Blitz”: Various. Punk, Dead Boys out of Cleveland, Pistols out of hell, Ramones and of course all the Metal we digested in our misspent youth. Why? Obvious, for us, again, no better high! Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: What bands presently do you think don’t get enough recognition, but should? Bobby “Blitz”: Machine Head. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: In my opinion, “real metal” is making a come back. Where do you see the Metal scene in the next 2-3 years? Bobby “Blitz”: I try not to project, expectations are never met. I look for progress, not perfection. This whole resurgence thing has its value but the other side of the coin is that with countless reunions, it seems to cheapen the scene as a whole. Everybody “was” and “is” great! Not necessarily the case. In my opinion, some of these bands sucked the first time around and there was a reason for their demise so others could take their place and progress. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: Any advice for an up-coming band that’s trying to get label interest and should they start with an independent label first versus a major label? Bobby “Blitz”: Take what you can get and get a good lawyer, protect yourself. Stick to your guns. It’s your ideas that count. Not the record company’s, not the management, not public opinion, not Billboard, not Korn, not me. Dawn/TheMetalWeb.com: Any final words for “The Metal Web!”? Bobby “Blitz”: Thanks, enjoyed our time!
